If your creature has first strike but does not manage to deal enough damage to destroy everything that it is in combat with you may cast spells and activate abilities to bounce it out of combat after it has dealt its damage and before the opposing creatures deal damage and save your creature.
Can you respond after first strike damage?
When First or Double Strike is involved there is a completely separate combat damage step created where that damage is dealt. It remains impossible to ‘respond to’ damage, but both players will get priority and can cast spells/activate abilities in that step, after First Strike damage, but before regular damage.
